Städtisches Museum Schloss Rheydt

In Mönchengladbach there is a remarkable castle from the Renaissance period - Rheydt Castle. It is the only castle in the Lower Rhine region that has been completely preserved in its architecture. The Renaissance architecture that can be admired today was created during the time of the von Bylandt family and has remained unchanged ever since.

In addition to the castle itself, the walk-through fortifications - both above and below ground - are an interesting experience for visitors. These fortifications were controversial at the time they were built and are now significant remnants of times past.

Today, Rheydt Castle serves not only as a municipal museum, but also as a venue for a variety of cultural events. The extensive green spaces also provide a natural recreational opportunity for visitors.

Museum :

Since 1922, the Municipal Museum has been located in a building complex that represents the only completely preserved Renaissance castle complex on the Lower Rhine. The magnificent Renaissance facade is just one of the many impressive features of this complex, which also reflects the character of a generous defense installation with its ramparts and bastions.

In terms of content, the museum's collections focus, among other things, on Renaissance and Baroque arts and crafts, the history of the castle's construction and use, and the urban history of the textile city of Mönchengladbach. A special exhibition is dedicated to the history of industrial and textile technology, which can be found in a specially presented collection stand in the so-called "Textile Technology Center" in the Monforts Quarter and is made accessible to visitors.

Opening hours:

Tuesday to Friday 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Saturday / Sunday 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.
Whit Monday and Easter Monday the museum is open.

The casemates are closed from the beginning of November to the end of February already at 4:30 p.m.

Dogs are allowed on the museum premises only on a leash!

The museum is closed on the following days:
New Year's Day, Shrove Monday / Violet Tuesday, Christmas Eve / Christmas Day, New Year's Eve.

There is hardly anything more exciting than great castles! If you are interested in the fascinating history of Rheydt Castle - who lived here and what aristocratic life was like at that time - then you are cordially invited to our open guided tours. During the one-hour guided tour, our docents will tell you all this and much more with the help of great objects.

Children are also welcome to participate in the open tours for children. You will be surprised what castle lords and ladies had to do all day long!
