The Sprengel Museum Hannover is one of the most important museums of 20th- and 21st-century art, focusing on German Expressionism and French Modernism. The museum is located in the immediate vicinity of the north shore of the Maschsee.
In 1969, the married couple Margrit and Bernhard Sprengel donated their collection of modern art to the state capital of Hanover. The donation was the initial spark for the construction of the museum, the first phase of which was opened in June 1979. The couple generously supported the construction of the museum.
