The St.Pauli landing stages are a major traffic hub of the most means of transportation in the harbour and they are also classified as a historical monument since 2003. The first shipping pier was established in 1839. It served as a landing stage of steamboats which filled with coal at this position. The gauge tower which is usedas a clock and as a bell tower forms the eastern end of the complex of buildings. On the Elb side of the tower is a water level indicator which informs about the current status of the tides.
