The gothic style church “Frauenkirche” dates back to the 15th Century. The nearly 100-metre high towers (also known as onion towers) are inspired by the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem.
The “Frauenkirche” is the distinctive landmark of Munich, yet not everybody knows that emperors found here their last resting place and that even the devil allegedly left footprints on its ground.
The south tower is accessible to visitors as a lookout point. It measures a proud 98.45 meters. Seven huge bells ring in this tower. At 98.57 meters, the north tower is minimally higher. A total of three bells hang in the tower. Here you can also still find the medieval treadwheel from the construction period.

On the floor in the entrance area under the choir, the impression of a human foot carved in stone can be seen in the pavement, which also has the imprint of a spur at the heel. If you place your foot in this step and look towards the high altar, you will not see any side windows; and from 1622 until about 1860 you could not see the central window either, because it was covered by the enormous Renaissance high altar with the picture of the Assumption of Mary by Peter Candid. The following legend is told about this black step:
The builder had bet with the devil for his soul that no window could be seen in the church. When the church was finished, but not yet consecrated, the devil crept through the big gate, curiously and grimly looking at the building; suddenly, however, he laughed out loud and thought that a building without windows would not be of much use. He was standing on the very spot where the black footprint is now. So he could not see a window; and in triumphant joy he stomped on the ground and left his footprint in the pavement. But when he went one step further, suddenly there were a lot of windows. Now he saw that he was the one who was bruised. In anger, he had turned into a fierce wind, and hoped that he could collapse the building in the storm. But he could not; and since then one or the other of his fellows still storms around the towers.
