Dortmund Central Station

Dortmund Central Station is the most important in the city and is used by 130,000 people every day. It has 16 platform tracks and is served by 4 of the 8 lines of the Dortmund Stadtbahn underground. The station of the "Köln-Mindener Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft" (CME for short because of Cologne's spelling at the time), which opened on May 15, 1847 north of the city center, started as Dortmund's main train station. Two years later, the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (BME) connected its station, which was operated purely as a terminal station, to the existing station. This is how Dortmund Central Station came into being, even if it wasn't called that yet.
In 1910, the original station building was replaced by a new building and the railroad tracks were raised to prevent car traffic from being hampered by railroad barriers. This made it one of the largest train stations in the German Empire when it opened. It received the name "Dortmund Hbf" in 1912.
In 1944 the station and large parts of the city center were destroyed in a bomb attack during the Second World War. The collapsed building was replaced in 1952 by a functional building, which was considered inconspicuous, but housed important glass motif windows from the Dortmund working world. They depict the city of Dortmund, a steelworker, a blast furnace worker, a brewer and a bridge builder. Large conversions or extensions to the shopping and adventure station planned between 1997 and 2000 repeatedly failed because the investors jumped off at short notice or plans were discarded. However, the renovation has been completed since 2009. So the station building was first renovated, then the urban railway hall was rebuilt. 2017 the last start of the major renovation to enable barrier-free access in the future took place.
