The European Central Bank (ECB) is the central bank of the 19 European Union countries which have adopted the euro. Their main task is to maintain price stability in the euro area and so preserve the purchasing power of the single currency. The ECB chose the site of the Großmarkthalle (Frankfurt’s former wholesale market hall) to build its new premises. The ECB began operating in November 2014 from a modern and functional building that was built to meet its specific requirements.
