Fischmarkt

The Fischmarkt is the centre of the city and is located in the old town between the cathedral square and the Anger. The square got its name already in the Middle Ages, when it was used as a trading place for fish and many other goods. Nowadays, the imposing neo-Gothic town hall and various restaurants and cafés can be found here. The worth seeing ensemble is completed by old patrician houses, which served as dwellings for merchants. To show their wealth, the owners gave their dwellings sonorous names such as "Haus zum Breiten Herd" and "Haus zum Güldenen Löwen". Another special feature is the statue of Roland, which is not a real Roland. In comparison to the Roland, which can be found in Magdeburg, among other places, this one does not stand for the freedom of the city and jurisdiction, but as a sign of the will to defend against the archbishop's influences. Nowadays it is often used as a meeting place for the people of Erfurt.
