Henkersteg

Via the Henkersteg the medieval executioners came from their secluded apartment in the Henkerhaus to the city when there was "work" to be done for them there. Since honourable citizens did not want to associate with the executioner, his official residence and that of his assistants were banished to the small Pegnitz island. The covered bridge connects the two halves of Nuremberg's old town, Sebald and Lorenz, and leads from Unschlittplatz directly to the Trödelmarkt with its many exclusive shops. After the executioner's bar was severely damaged during the Second World War, it was reconstructed in 1954. Directly above the river, in the immediate vicinity is the Henkerhaus with the former official residence, which was designed as an exhibition about the criminal history of the city and provides an insight into the life of the medieval executioner.
