Cadolzburg Castle

The Cadolzburg, built on a steep rocky spur, with its palas, imposing ring wall and main gate was built in the middle of the 13th century by the Hohenzollern family. In the following centuries it was extended to create a prestigious complex. The Hohenzollern originally came from Swabia, but after they were appointed burgraves of Nuremberg by the emperor in 1191/92, their centre of power shifted to Franconia.

When in the 14th century the Zollerns increasingly came into conflict with the citizens of the Imperial City of Nuremberg, they moved their seat of government to the nearby castle of Cadolzburg.

Cadolzburg today houses the exhibition "HerrschaftsZeiten! Experience Cadolzburg " („A castle and ist lords. The Cadolzburg experience”), which allows an entertaining and exciting encounter with the Middle Ages on around 1,500 m² of exhibition space. In addition to historical grains and herbs for bread-making, the walled castle garden primarily features useful and ornamental plants from the Middle Ages.
