Nikolaikirche

The Nikolaikirche is the oldest and largest church in Leipzig. Located in the centre of the city, it is the most famous church in the city next to St. Thomas's Church. Built in the style of classicism, the church celebrated its 850th anniversary in 2015, thus looking back on an eventful past. In 1539 the first official Protestant service was held in Leipzig and the Reformation was introduced. When Johann Sebastian Bach took office as Director musices of the city, many of the composer's pieces were premiered in the Nikolaikirche with the Thomanerchor, a choir rich in tradition that still exists today. It is also regarded as the source of the peaceful revolution of 1989. The peace prayers, which are still held regularly until today, have always been a ritual that creates identity and is by no means out of date with regard to current global events.
