The cologne cathedral is the the town’s landmark and famous outside of the city boundary. The cathedral is 157,38 meters high and the second highest church building in Europe after the Ulm Minster. The height of the building embosses the skyline of cologne. It is the most visited sight in Germany with around 20.000 up to 30.000 visitors. The cologne cathedral was built in the 13th century (gothic period) until it was finished after a long building freeze in the 19th century. Since 1996 the cologne cathedral was declared as World Heritage Site. One can find the cathedral right next to the central station and it is surrounded by a lot of modern concrete constructions. This part is called the “Domplatte”. Furthermore, during Christmas time one can find one of the most popular Christmas markets around the cologne cathedral.
