University of Heidelberg

The University of Heidelberg is Germany's oldest university with a history of over 600 years. It was founded in 1386 with the motto "Semper apertus - always open". The aphorism means the book of teaching, which should always be open and which can still be found in the foyer of the old university.
Over the centuries, this requirement profile has been put into scientific practice by important scholars. These include the philosopher Georg Willhelm Friedrich Hegel, the chemist Robert Bunsen, the physicist Hermann von Helmholtz, the economist and social scientist Max Weber and the philosopher Karl Jaspers.
Today about 28,000 students study and research in the 12 faculties and 14 Collaborative Research Centres, more than 20% of them from abroad. This underlines the excellent reputation the university has all over the world. Heidelberg University of Applied Sciences holds top positions in recognised rankings in the fields of medicine, life sciences, physics, chemistry and mathematics.
Since 2007, the Ruperto Carola or Ruprecht-Karls-University has been one of the universities of excellence.

Old auditorium

The Aula, the historical representation hall of Ruperto Carola, is located on the first floor. In the past it was also used for academic teaching, but today the university uses it mainly for academic celebrations. Concerts, lectures and similar festivities, which are given a special glamour by the venerable ambience of the assembly hall, also take place there.
On the occasion of the five hundredth anniversary of Ruperto Carola in 1886, the assembly hall was redesigned to its present appearance. The plans for this were drawn up by Josef Durm.
In the assembly hall you can see portraits and busts of your founders, innovators, patrons and scholars from the beginnings to the 19th century.

Student karzer (student prison)

The Studentenkarzer is the student prison of Heidelberg University. Since its foundation it has been one of its privileges to be able to administer justice to its members. Since 1886, however, this jurisdiction has been limited to disciplinary proceedings.
The prison was established around 1780 and was used from 1823 to 1914. Students were imprisoned for offences such as violent mensuration, disturbing the peace at night or other offences against public order.
The detention could last between 3 days and 4 weeks. Officially, the detainees were allowed to attend classes and perform their other duties as students, but only after they had been dealt with did they have to return to their cells.
Life in the detention cell was considered quite comfortable and so the detention was increasingly used to "skip" lectures. It was especially popular among students to immortalize themselves on the walls and ceilings of the carcass with paintings and poems. To this day, efforts are being made to conserve these legacies and preserve them for posterity.
