City Hall Heidelberg

After the predecessor building was destroyed by French troops in 1689, the foundation stone for the new building, which is still preserved today, was laid in 1701. The plans for the central building were written by chief engineer Flemal. The sculpture with masks and artificial coat of arms was created by the Hungarian sculptor Heinrich Charrasky, who lived in Heidelberg from 1710 to 1720. The rococo lattice with the initials of Elector Karl Theodor, which is located on the balcony, was not added until 1751. From 1870/71 the town hall was finally too small for the administrative activities that had increased as a result of the city's upswing, and so an extension was built in 1886 to the east.
A fire in 1908 made a reconstruction necessary, and so the houses then still standing south of the town hall were demolished and replaced by the new part of the town hall.
A further extension was built on the east side in 1961, which also included the turret with chimes. Especially worth seeing is the large town hall in the neo-renaissance style with its wood panelling and the great paintings.
