Canaletto-Blick Dresden

The Canaletto View is a special perspective on the panorama of Dresden's Old Town - the view from the right bank of the Elbe below the Augustus Bridge, which the painter Bernado Belotto called Canaletto had while creating the oil painting in 1748. At the place where the artist once made his world-famous drawing, today there is an empty frame imitating the original view - in the foreground the Elbe with its busy shipping traffic, in the background the imposing buildings of the royal seat with Dresden Castle with the Hausmann Tower and the Catholic Hofkirche. To the left of it is the Georgentor with the adjacent Stallhof, behind it the tower of the Kreuzkirche. Other historical buildings such as the palace, the library and the picture gallery belong to Brühl's splendours, which were demolished in the 19th century, are in the shadow of the magnificent dome of the Frauenkirche.
A comparison with the photo of the original painting, which is located at this place, is worthwhile, as all the buildings that were destroyed during the Second World War have been rebuilt in the meantime - so today's view of the so-called "Florence on the Elbe" does not differ too much from the historical view.
The original painting can be admired nearby in the Old Masters Picture Gallery.
