The Theaterplatz is one of the most beautiful and significant squares in the city. Located on the western edge of Dresden's Old Town, it is characterised by its diverse architectural styles - the square is lined by the Baroque Catholic Hofkirche and the Zwinger, the Renaissance Residence Palace, the Classicist Italian village, the Old Masters Picture Gallery and the Neo-Renaissance Semper Opera House. In the centre of the square the bronze König-Johann monument rises, a statue of the Saxon king equestrian statue, created by Johannes Schilling in 1889.
