The Catholic Hofkirche is located in the heart of Dresden's Old Town, near the Freitreppe and on the banks of the Elbe. In Roman baroque style, it was commissioned by August the Strong, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland. There is an interesting history behind it - in order to be crowned king in Poland, the ruler had to convert from Protestantism to the Catholic faith. The church was consecrated in 1751. Due to a long construction period and the magnificent jewellery, the construction was particularly cost-intensive. Especially the 3.50 meter high statues of saints on the roof and on the tower are worth seeing.
Like many other buildings, the Hofkirche was severely damaged by air raids during the Second World War. Only the Bennokapelle was spared to such an extent that the first church service could already take place in June 1945. The reconstruction of the church began in 1946 and was finally completed in 1987.
