Cogwheel Train

The cogwheel train connects the Marienplatz (valley station in the city centre) with Degerloch and thus serves the Stuttgarters as a daily means of transport in commuter traffic. The historic railway was opened in 1884 and is thus more than 130 years old. It is one of the last four of its kind in Germany and the only one that serves the daily business of a big city. The train covers a distance of 2.2 km per tour and conquers a maximum gradient of 17.8 percent.
It is also affectionately called "Zacke" by the inhabitants of the state capital, but is at least as popular with tourists due to its magnificent panoramic views.
