The market is a rectangular square in the center of Leipzig. It is about one hectare large and lies directly at the foot of the Old Town Hall and is considered the centre of the city. Besides the Leipzig Fair, which took place here until the late 19th century, the market was in the past the scene of knight plays as cultural highlights and was used as a court for public executions.
Today a weekly market is regularly held here, where fresh regional products are offered for sale. With the staging of the Leipzig Christmas Market, the Easter Market and the annual wine festival, the market proves again and again its versatility.
The market with its adjoining buildings is considered one of Leipzig's most beautiful promenades and is an ideal starting point for a stroll through the historic city centre.
