Weißgerbergasse is considered to be one of the best preserved medieval building ensembles in Nuremberg and runs through the Sebalder Old Town north of the Pegnitz. Despite the heavy air raids on the city during the Second World War, a good twenty half-timbered houses remained here.
The origin of the street lies in the old craftsmen's quarter within the former city fortifications, and so the name also has a historical meaning: it originates from the white leather tanners who lived here in the Middle Ages and produced light leather.
During a stroll through the tranquil alleyway, lined with bars, restaurants and galleries, small details that are attached to the otherwise rather simple craft houses are particularly worth seeing. For example, looking for the Weißgerber emblem from 1708 and the Schlosserzeichen around 1820 at house number 24 is well worthwhile.
