Domberg

The ensemble of the cathedral and St. Severi Church welcomes visitors to Erfurt from afar and forms the centre of the old town. With its 81-metre high towers, Erfurt Cathedral towers above the rest of the city and is the highest church in the city of Erfurt. Visitors who wish to visit the Cathedral Hill must first climb the 70 cathedral steps to reach the two places of worship. However, the climb is rewarded with a special view over the city. The annual Cathedral Steps Festival attracts thousands of visitors to the city centre every year. A stage is set up below the cathedral hill and selected musical pieces are performed.

Erfurt Cathedral

The catholic cathedral was built as early as 725 and has been continuously extended over the centuries. Thus it combines Romanesque and especially Gothic elements. Next to the cathedral treasury, a tour of the tower is possible. The 13 Gothic high windows show a Gothic painting cycle and have existed since the Middle Ages. Particularly worth seeing is the mosaic of the Virgin Mary, which consists of 133 individual panels and shows a historical portrait of the Virgin Mary. The Gloriosa, the largest free-swinging bell in the world, which dates from the Middle Ages, can also be heard from afar. Besides church services and guided tours, the cathedral offers a selection of classical concerts.

St. Severi-Church

Little is known about the origin of the Catholic Church of St. Severi, except that it was once part of a Benedictine monastery that was located right next to the church. The church has existed in its form since 1350 and is a Gothic hall church. This architectural style is characterized by high ceilings, pointed arches and the struts that cross at the ceiling. In addition to some historical figures such as a 15-metre high baptismal font, the sacrophagus of St. Severus of Ravenna with his wife and daughter is located in the church. The church is freely accessible and holds a service every Sunday at 09:30.
