Erfurt's main railway station is centrally located in the old town and is an important traffic junction both in the city centre and beyond. The bus station is also located in the immediate vicinity. The Willy-Brandt-Platz in front of the station got its name from the first German-German summit meeting in 1970 with the then Federal Chancellor. As the people at that place were enthusiastically cheering him at that time, the city of Erfurt took this as an occasion to rename the square.
