Ostfriesische Inseln

Lined up like a string of pearls are the East Frisian Islands off the coast of Lower Saxony, along the East Frisian Peninsula: Borkum, Juist, Norderney, Baltum, Langeoog, Spiekeroog and Wangerooge. The island family is part of the largest mudflats in the North Sea and belongs to the Wadden Sea National Park. During low tide, the mudflats dry up to the mainland and the islands of Norderney, Baltrum, Langeoog, Spiekeroog and Wangerooge can be reached by mudflat walk during this time. Many information centers along the North Sea coast present a lot of interesting facts about the UNESCO World Heritage Site to the guests of the region and are worth a trip and the further journey if the opportunity arises!
On the seaward side, the islands all have sandy beaches, the interior of which consists of dune formations. The transition between sea and land on the side facing the mainland consists of salt marshes. With the diverse nature, varied cultural and recreational opportunities and various sports and wellness offers, the East Frisian Islands are popular excursion and vacation destinations for those seeking relaxation, families and active vacationers.

Profile of the seven sisters:

Borkum – The largest

On 31 km² Borkum offers sports, nature and culture. A network of a total of 130 km of cycling and hiking trails offers an outstanding opportunity to explore the nature of the island without a car. The seemingly endless expanse of the beach and the dunes quickly make everyday life fade into the background. For those who like to take it easy, the island offers idyllic walks, for example to one of the three lighthouses. In addition to the New Lighthouse (1879) and the Old Lighthouse, which has served as a navigation mark since 1576, the Small Lighthouse (1891) with its red and white paint scheme is a beautiful destination.
And on the 26-kilometer-long coastline, water and beach sports are not neglected either: it offers the best conditions for sailing, kiteboarding and kite buggy riding. At the latest at the traditional beach volleyball tournament or the big North Sea run, every recreational athlete gets his money's worth. But of course, the three Borkum beaches - North Beach, South Beach and Nudist Beach - also offer plenty of space for extensive sunbathing and swimming. So that guests do not get dehydrated during a long stay on the beach, they are supplied with refreshing drinks and tasty snacks on Borkum according to a long tradition by the so-called Milchbuden on the beach promenades. They are unique and firmly anchored in Borkum's history.
Those who crave culture should definitely not miss the undisputed highlight at the local history museum "Dykhus": It houses, among other things, a complete whale skeleton. A pretty pedestrian zone with extravagant stores and elegant boutiques, a casino and a diverse nightlife round out the offerings on Borkum. A Bimmelbahn transports guests from the ferry pier to the city center.

Juist - The Magical

With a width of only 500 meters, Juist is very narrow, but its length of 17 kilometers makes it the longest of the seven East Frisian islands. It is nicknamed Töwerland (Magic Land) and its special charm captivates young and old. Besides the long white sandy beaches and the picturesque dunes, the island is characterized by a very special attribute: It is namely completely car-free! Juist is a horse island - whether people, goods or building materials, here everything is transported by carriages and horse-drawn carts. The horses characterize the flair of the island and contribute to the special degree of deceleration. Some even claim that this was invented here. Despite the great popularity as a vacation and excursion destination, there is hardly anything to be felt of the big tourist hype here.
The island is considered an unspoiled natural beauty. The salty sea water, the pure air free of exhaust fumes, the rushing waves and the fresh breeze guarantee relaxation and thalasso from the first moment.
Juist is considered particularly child-friendly and offers enough space for splashing and romping with its 17 km long sandy beach.
The unmistakable landmark of the island is the sea mark at the pier near the harbor entrance. In the form of a floating buoy, it rises 17 meters into the sky. The viewing platform offers a magnificent all-round view of the island and the Wadden Sea.

Norderney - The Queen

With a tradition that goes back more than 220 years, Norderney is the oldest North Sea spa in Germany. It gives Thalasso a home and, as a sophisticated health resort, invites you to experience health from the sea. Panoramic views of the endless expanses of majestic nature and the sea provide unconditional relaxation.
A total of five guarded bathing beaches invite to extensive bathing pleasure during the main season. Due to the sometimes strong currents, bathing in unattended places is dangerous!
However, those who like to spend their vacation actively will also get their money's worth here. Whether surfing, kiting, or kayaking, in a taster course or in big championships - here everyone can show what he is made of. A diverse beach sports program brings body and soul into harmony during yoga with a view of the sea or strengthens the stomach, back and legs. By the way, it is also a lot of fun to explore the island by bike. A 26-kilometer network of routes leads through the ups and downs of the dune landscape. Go on a discovery tour through the unique landscape of the Wadden Sea, along salt marshes and dikes! Popular destinations are the 54-meter high lighthouse in the center of the narrow island and the Norderney Cape. The 13-meter high beacon is located on the eastern edge of the town area and is used as Norderney's emblem. It is an old maritime sign and the unmistakable emblem of the island. The well-developed, versatile network of bridle paths with a total length of 40 kilometers provides great pleasure for horse enthusiasts. On horseback you can experience the beauty of the island from a new perspective!
The cultural hustle and bustle in the west of Norderney also gave it a lively reputation. There is always something going on here. Architecturally, the urban center of the little town stands out - the Kurtheater, the Kurhaus and the Kurhotel from the Wilhelminian period characterize the townscape, and the Conversationshaus invites you to interesting events. If you want to get to the bottom of the island lifestyle and experience dreamlike sunsets on the promenade, this is the place to be.

Baltrum - The Calm

Baltrum is the youngest of the inhabited East Frisian islands and therefore also bears the nickname "Sleeping Beauty". With only 6.5 km² it has made a name for itself as an island of short distances. It is completely car-free; traffic works exclusively by horse-drawn carts and by bicycle, which makes the island an idyllic vacation paradise for those seeking relaxation and young families. You can't get lost here, and yet there is something new to discover at every turn!
The long beach is perfect for lazing, splashing and frolicking and also offers wonderful conditions for surfing and kiting because of the offshore sandbanks. Both beginners and professionals can plunge into the waters here and prove their skills.
Particularly remarkable in view of the small population of 500 people is the wide range of cultural activities on offer. It ranges from dance and music groups to events on the Baltrum island stage.
By the way, the island's landmark is a bell that is hung in the village center. It comes from a Dutch shipwreck.

Langeoog - The Serene

The North Sea spa Langeoog is, like Juist and Baltrum, car-free and is characterized by particular peace and idyll. With about 20 km² it is of medium size compared to the size of the other East Frisian islands. The small island train transports guests across the island.
The highlight of the island is the 14 kilometer long natural beach, which invites families and active vacationers to extensive beach visits. A unique sports and activity program motivates to joint exercise units. Extensive cycling and hiking trails also offer 35 kilometers of space to explore the island and the majestic beauty of nature on your own.
The landmark of the island is the water tower on the outskirts of the village. From here you have a wonderful view over the entire island all the way to the mainland. The Langeoog Shipping Museum is also worth a visit.
The serenity of the inhabitants is omnipresent and explains the great popularity among visitors to the island.

Spiekeroog – The Green Island

Spiekeroog has the reputation of being the "quaintest" of the East Frisian islands. If you are looking for relaxation and tranquility, this is the place for you. Village charm and nature in abundance on 17 km² - that's what the only East Frisian island without an airport offers. You will search in vain for car noise and big hotel castles, not even a bicycle rental can be found. Instead, the island offers fine white beaches, wide dune landscapes and idyllic Frisian cottages and invites you to take long walks. Enjoy the light-heartedness of the fine North Sea breeze, the lush green landscapes and the sound of the sea.
A visit to the curious shell museum and a ride on the museum horse-drawn railroad are a must during a stay on Spiekeroog. Tip: A boat trip to the seal banks fascinates young and old explorers and demonstrates the region's need for protection.

Wangerooge - The Wanderlust

At just under 5 km², Wangerooge is the smallest of the North Frisian Islands. Due to heavy seas and strong currents, the island has regular dune eruptions in the west, while sand is deposited in the east of the island, so that the island continues to shift in this direction. The shape and size of the island thus changes again and again.
You won't find any cars on the island, but the island streetcar transports visitors from A to B through the Wadden Sea National Park at a speed of 20 km/h. On the island, however, no way is too far and every destination is reached in a maximum of ten minutes on foot.
With ideal surfing and kite conditions, Wangerooge is also considered one of the best and most popular water sports spots in Europe. From the shore you can also watch seals on the sandbanks in front of the island. The fine sandy beach invites recreational athletes, those seeking relaxation and families to spend relaxing days on the beach. Numerous wellness offers, the information center in the national park house and the old lighthouse with the island museum and the picturesque view over the surrounding landscape round off the offer.
Wangerooge offers omnipresent serenity and deceleration and thus ensures extraordinary relaxation for its guests, true to the island motto: "God created time, he said nothing about haste".
