The Old Bridge - landmark of the state capital and the oldest preserved bridge in Saarland (1548). Since it is only open to pedestrians and cyclists, it is a wonderful place to explore. The bridge connects the districts of Alt-Saarbrücken and St. Johann and is located in the immediate vicinity of sights such as the Saarbrücken Castle and the St. Johanner Markt.
Over the course of time, however, various construction measures became necessary - for example, in the course of the straightening of the Saar in 1763, destruction caused by floods and damage during the wars in Europe, some pillars had to be removed or filled in again and again. Nowadays, the project "Stadtmitte am Fluss" is considering restoring the bridge to its original form.
