Ludwigskirche

The Ludwigskirche - the city's landmark and, along with the Dresden Frauenkirche and the Hamburg "Michel", one of the most important Protestant baroque churches in Germany. It was built between 1762 and 1775 with a link-up to the Saarbrücken palace and is named after its finisher, Prince Ludwig of Nassau-Saarbrücken.
Together with the surrounding palace for court officials, as well as the poor-, orphanage-, and work-house (today the Academy of Fine Arts), the church formed a magnificent baroque ensemble. After the devastating destruction of the church building during a British bombing raid in October 1944, in which the building was damaged down to the foundation walls, the church was rebuilt true to the original according to the historical model and was put into service in 1975.
