The Ballhofplatz is situated in the middle of the old town and got its name from the Ballhof which was built here in 1649. Originally built for ball games and dance festivals, after the destruction of numerous theatres during the Second World War it is still used today as a venue for the State Theatre. In summer, cultural events of all kinds take place on the square in historical surroundings, including concerts and dance evenings. But even in quieter times the square is tranquil - pretty half-timbered houses line the square and cosy cafés invite you to linger.
