Fischland Darß-Zingst

Located between Rostock and Stralsund on the Baltic Sea coast, the region around the 45-kilometer-long peninsula Fischland-Darß-Zingst is one of the most popular vacation regions. The possibilities for leisure activities are diverse and hold something in store for families and water sports enthusiasts, as well as for those interested in art and culture, and for nature lovers.
A special sight is the lighthouse Darßer Ort at the northern tip of the peninsula. The red bricks can be seen from afar during a walk to the beacon. Built in 1847, it is one of the oldest sea lights on the German Baltic coast. The observation deck of the 36-meter-high tower offers a beautiful panoramic view of the surrounding area and the roaring Baltic Sea.
The communities of the peninsula are Dierhagen, Wustrow, Ahrenshoop, Wieckf, Born, Prerow and Zingst. They are former fishing and seafaring villages. Lovingly preserved captain's houses as typical monuments of the seafaring tradition house cafés, small stores or souvenir stores.

Beaches

The region is perfect for a few relaxing days on the beach. The Darßer Weststrand in Prerow offers 14 kilometers of largely untouched nature. Soft sand, wide dunes and wild flora offer a secluded vacation idyll at the edge of the Darß forest. The traditional seaside resort of Zingst stands out with its fine sandy beach, the 270-meter-long pier with a diving gondola, and the pretty white villas. The beach promenade with restaurants and stores invites you to stroll after an extensive beach day.

Sporty Activities

The peninsula is a true water sports paradise. It separates the calm Bodden waters, which are ideal for sailing and stand-up paddling with their romantic bays, from the roaring Baltic Sea, which in turn offers excellent conditions for surfing and kiting.
The regionally typical Zeesboote with the distinctive brown sails let you feel the seafaring romance at first hand during a boat trip across the beautiful Bodden.

Families

In addition to the Natureum in Darßer Ort, the Experimentarium in Zingst is a popular destination and is guaranteed not to leave you bored. Because here you can play, discover, try out and experiment for all you're worth! Various workshops invite you to do handicrafts and the large outdoor playground with a lighthouse and a steerable ship model offer plenty of space to romp around.

Nature

The well-developed network of cycling and hiking trails leads through the coastal forest and dunes, along the Bodden or over the dike and offers picturesque views of the Baltic Sea.
A special natural spectacle every year are the crane migrations. In spring and autumn, up to 40,000 migratory birds can be observed on the bird sanctuary island of Kirr as they migrate from their breeding grounds to their winter quarters and back again. The island is a true crane paradise and offers the animals a safe resting place.
The Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park is the largest national park in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, covering almost 800 square kilometers and encompassing large areas of the open Baltic Sea and large forest areas such as the Darß Forest. It stretches from the west coast of Darß over the island of Hiddensee to the west coast of Rügen. The unique wildlife of seals, grey seals, otters, fallow deer and red deer is under special protection here both on water and on land.

Culture and Arts

Located in the immediate vicinity of the Darß lighthouse on the north coast of the peninsula is the Natureum Darßer Ort. It functions as an information center of the National Park Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft. The aquariums and exhibitions provide exciting insights into the Baltic Sea and Darßer Ort as a habitat for local flora and fauna, the dynamics and need for protection of the coastal landscape, and historical facts. It is part of the Stiftung Deutsches Meeresmuseum (German Oceanographic Museum Foundation) and, in addition to and in cooperation with the Ozeaneum in Stralsund, is committed to the protection and communication of knowledge about the German coastal region.
However, those interested in culture and history also get their money's worth. Many other museums and local history rooms offer interesting information about the history of seafaring and the region. For example, a former captain's house houses the Museum Zingst and the Museumshof and portrays the seamen's way of life and the development of the fishing village into a popular Baltic Sea spa.
The nearby Hanseatic cities of Rostock and Stralsund, with their quaint merchants' houses and impressive brick Gothic-style religious buildings, are tempting day trips.
Art lovers should visit the art museum in Ahrenshoop. The architecture of the museum can be considered a work of art in itself. The history of the artists' village goes back 120 years and is portrayed in the exhibition with a focus on the selected works. Embark on a journey of discovery through artistic creation in Ahrenshoop - then and now. Traditional arts and crafts can be seen in the Darß Museum in Prerow. Older painted house doors, which are part of the Darß townscape, are exhibited there.
