Burg auf Fehmarn

As the third largest German island in the Baltic Sea, Fehmarn has a lot to offer. The cultural center of the island is located in Burg. The village was first mentioned in 1202. This also coincides with the construction of St. Nicholas Church from 1230-1250. The Gothic brick church, together with the Petrikirche in Landkirchen, is the oldest church on the island.
The charming old town captivates visitors with its winding alleys and old half-timbered houses and invites you to take a historical walk. It is home to many sights such as the old Hochständerhaus, which served as a residence for the master tanners. The town hall on the market square in clinker brick construction is a special eye-catcher with its many angles and turrets.
The oldest house on the island houses the Peter Wiepert Home Museum in the shadow of the Nikolai Church. It portrays the history of Fehmarn up to its development as a popular vacation island.
Another highlight and especially in summer a popular destination is the harbor of Burg. With its yachts and fishing boats, the modern harbor spreads a maritime flair. If you like, you can buy freshly caught fish directly from the boat. The beach promenade with a view of the arriving ships invites you to take long, relaxing walks.
