Schwerin Castle

Situated on the castle island and surrounded by the castle lake, the imposing castle is located directly in front of Schwerin's city center and seems to have sprung from a fairy tale in this dreamlike setting.
It looks back on a thousand-year history of construction and owes its ring-shaped form to the ramparts of a Slavic castle that once stood on the same site. The castle in its present form dates back to the 19th century and was built in the neo-Renaissance style according to the French model. For centuries it served as a residence for Mecklenburg dukes and continues its traditional use as a political center with its current function as the seat of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern state parliament.
However, it is also considered a cultural meeting place - for example, the castle's interiors house part of the Schwerin State Museum.
The castle is considered one of the most important examples of Romantic Historicism in Germany and Europe and also proudly bears the nickname "Neuschwanstein of the North." The impressive palace and castle garden with baroque character surrounds the palace and invites you to stroll along the idyllic lakeside.
