Hanseatic City of Stralsund with Old Town Tour As one of the most important Hanseatic cities along with Lübeck during the 14th century, Stralsund looks back on an important past. A walk through the tranquil old town still bears witness to the city's heyday as a founding member of the Hanseatic League and a trading center of international standing. Stately brick burgher houses in Gothic and Baroque style with their different gable forms and narrow streets in the old town center characterize the picture. The old town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2002. As in the old town of Wismar, the heritage of the Hanseatic League has been preserved here in a unique way. Surrounded by three ponds as well as the Baltic Sea, the historic city center lies protected on an island. The immediate proximity to the island of Rügen also gives the city the nickname "Gateway to the Island of Rügen".
