Garnitz Hunting Lodge

Granitz Hunting Lodge is a very special jewel on the largest German island of Rügen. Built between 1837 and 1846 and extremely luxuriously furnished, the castle was once the hunting seat of a princely family. With four round corner towers, it was built in the northern Italian Renaissance style. It is located on one of the highest mountains on the island, Tempelberg, in the middle of the Granitz forest and hunting area, which covers about 1,000 hectares.
The 38-meter-high central tower was added later and was designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. It protrudes extravagantly from the castle and the forest. If you climb the 154 steps on the cantilevered spiral staircase to the viewing platform, you will be rewarded with sweeping views of the landscape and the sea, the Jasmund and Wittow peninsulas and Stralsund. In good weather, it even allows a view as far as the Bay of Binz and the neighboring islands of Usedom and Hiddensee.

Tips on how to get there: Cars are not allowed on the castle grounds, but the last few kilometers from the parking lot are easily manageable on foot or by bicycle. Alternatively, the Jagdschloss Express runs from Binz directly to the castle, as well as the narrow-gauge railroad "Rasender Roland" from Sellin. Sit back and enjoy a leisurely stroll!
