One of Germany's largest museum projects is currently being built in Hamburg: the German Port Museum. It‘s aim is to show the importance of German seaports and inland ports through the course of history. Also the museum is supposed to act as a "museum of globalization" and show the impact of international maritime trade on people's lives.
The new museum is planned at two locations, which will cover different subject areas: It is already possible to visit the site around the historic sheds at Hansahafen. There, with the help of a number of volunteers, an important period of port history can be vividly experienced: the time of cargo handling before the introduction of the container. In addition, the 2,500 square meters of the building house around 10,000 objects on the subjects of port work, cargo handling, shipbuilding and shipping in the Ruhr area.
The most striking and impressive large object is the more than 100-year-old four-masted barque PEKING, which can be visited.
A new building is to be erected in the Grasbrook district in the coming years. This will primarily show the importance of international maritime trade for people's lives.
