Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), Frankfurt’s most famous son, is considered to be one of the major players of German poetry. His works are among the highlights of world literature. Besides his life of being a poet, he was an artist, a theater director, a natural scientist, an art theorist and statesman. The reliefs at the bottom of the monument on Goetheplatz show figures of Goethe’s works: allegoric figures of the sciences as well as the dramatic and lyric poetry.
