St. Thomas' Church is the second important church in Leipzig's city centre after St. Nicholas' Church and is known as the creation site of the composer Johann Sebastian Bach as cantor of the Thomanerchor, founded in 1212, one of Germany's best-known boys' choirs, which still exists today.
The late Gothic sacred building was badly damaged in air raids during the Second World War. As the surrounding buildings were also badly damaged, extensive alterations to the façade were necessary during the reconstruction work after the end of the war. Since 1949 Bach's grave has been located here, which was inaugurated in 1950 on the 200th anniversary of the composer's death.
A special experience is the ascent of the octagonal tower from the Renaissance, which rewards its visitors with a wonderful panorama of Leipzig and also offers a view of the more than 500-year-old roof truss of the church.
