Mendebrunnen

The Mendebrunnen is the largest and most magnificent fountain in Leipzig and is located in the middle of Augustusplatz in front of the Gewandhaus. It is the only remnant of the square ensemble as it was known before the air raids on the city during the Second World War. In the neo-baroque style, several bronze figures, some spitting water, are lined up around a central obelisk about 18 metres high.
The depiction of the figures represents the significance of water for human beings in a figurative sense - for example, several figures from Greek mythology can be identified, among them Triton, the son of Poseidon, who appears twice, as well as powerful Hippokampen, mythical creatures half horse, half fish, which can be interpreted as man's mastery of the forces of the sea.
