In the heart of Nuremberg's old town, the Frauenkirche is located directly on the main market square. The Gothic building was commissioned by Emperor Charles IV and built on the foundations of a synagogue in the former Jewish quarter. The consecration took place in 1358. A star of David embedded in the ground still reminds of the origins.
As is well known, the daily "Männleinlauf" ("running in of men") at 12 noon is particularly worth seeing. This is a spectacle in which the figures on the art clock on the west gable of the church are set in motion by the mechanism of the clock after the completed hour strike and bypass the emperor three times in the homage tour. The seven electoral princes are to honour the Emperor Charles IV in remembrance of the decree of the Golden Bulls. A gold-blue ball above the clock also indicates the phase of the moon.
During the Christmas season, each Friday before the 1st Advent, the prologue of the Nuremberg Christ Child is spoken on the balcony of the Frauenkirche, thus opening the well-known Nuremberg Christmas Market.
