Jan-Wellem-Monument

The Jan Wellem equestrian statue can be found in the heart of the old town on Düsseldorf's market square. It shows Johann Wilhelm von Pfalz-Neuburg, the Elector of the Pfalz and Duke of Jüllich-Berg, called Jan Willem by the people of Düsseldorf at that time. The sovereign proudly sits on a trotting horse; in full armour, with electoral hat and marshal's baton, which identifies him as general. The collar of the order, which he wears over his breastplate, identifies him as a member of the European aristocracy. The monument mainly served to demonstrate power and political influence.
The life-size statue has become the landmark of Düsseldorf and a popular photo motif among visitors to the city.
