Frauenkirche Dresden

The Frauenkirche welcomes all its guests who want to enjoy the beauty of the room and take in the message of the church. You are very welcome!

Admission to the Frauenkirche during the times of the open church is free. With a donation you can contribute to the preservation of the Frauenkirche in Dresden.

With 130 concerts and church music events a year, the Frauenkirche offers a programme that is unique in its breadth for a church building.

The church, which was rebuilt between 1994 and 2005, has one of the largest stone domes north of the Alps. It was built from 1726 to 1743 according to a design by George Bähr and became an emblem of both the Dresden Baroque and the famous city silhouette.

During the World War II on the night of 13 to 14 February 1945, it was severely damaged by the firestorm that raged in Dresden and collapsed on the morning of 15 February 1945. In the GDR, a small part of the church remained in ruins and was left as a memorial against war and destruction, instead of being torn down like other church ruins.

Reconstruction began after the reunification of Germany in 1994. The construction work, which was completed in 2005, can only be carried out with the support of funding associations and donors from all over the world.

Services & Devotions

place of faith

As an open house of God and the people, the Frauenkirche invites you to worship and devotion.

church services

The regular main service takes place on Sundays at 11 a.m. and is usually performed with vocal church music. Holy Communion is celebrated once a month and is also baptized once a month during this service. The Sunday evening service begins at 6 pm and is characterised by thematic sermon series. Instrumental church music is played. Once a month this service is celebrated as an Anglican evening prayer in English. On Christian holidays and other special occasions, the Frauenkirche also invites to church services and other spiritual offerings such as the New Year's service, the celebration of Easter Night or the memorial service for mourners.

devotions

With the sound of the peace bell, which calls us to pause and pray for peace in the world, the midday organ landings begin. From Monday to Saturday at 12 noon organ music, psalm prayer, songs and a spiritual word fill the church room. The Friday noon prayer of reconciliation is held in Coventry. Evening devotions are celebrated from Monday to Wednesday or on Friday at 6 pm. After each of the noon and evening devotions, a church guide explains the history, architecture and iconography of the Frauenkirche from the pulpit.

Following the tradition of peace prayers, which already existed during the reconstruction of the Frauenkirche, groups of the Christian churches of the city hold the ecumenical evening prayer in the lower church every Thursday at 6 pm.

In the summer months, interested parties are cordially invited to early Saturday morning devotions on the observation platform once a month. Framed by music, the day is welcomed between heaven and earth. If you want to be there, you have to get up early: Meet at 6 a.m. at entrance G of the Frauenkirche (for dates see calendar of events).

Dome ascent to the observation platform

A very special attraction is the (chargeable) ascent to the dome and observation platform of the Frauenkirche. The dome ascent starts at entrance G. It is spatially and organisationally separated from the visit of the church and is offered by the dome ascent Frauenkirche Dresden GmbH.

An elevator will take visitors to the 24 m site. The path continues over narrow stairs to the so-called spiral ramp, a continuously ascending spiral path that circles the outer dome two and a half times. This section is strenuous: after all, the path formerly known as the "donkey walk" has a gradient of 14 percent. Two further flights of stairs - one of them in the form of a steep ladder staircase - take visitors to the 67 m high observation platform. There you have a unique view over Dresden and the surrounding area.

Note: The not to be underestimated effort of the ascent requires a good health condition. Sturdy footwear is required. Please read the house rules.
