Experience history at close range
In the centre of Berlin Mitte, where Checkpoint Charlie used to be, stands the BlackBox Kalter Krieg. Here, contemporary history comes alive: Churchill, Stalin, Roosevelt, the Korean War and the Cuba Crisis, Khrushchev's legendary appearance before the UN General Assembly, missile programmes, propaganda, tanks used against popular movements, the arms' race, espionage, wars in Africa, Indochina and the Near East, reform movements and peaceful revolutions - the Cold War has many different faces.
For almost half a century, the battle between two political systems shapes world events - with the Communist dictators in the East under the leadership of the Soviet Union on the one side, and the democracies of the West led by the USA on the other.
Berlin is the focal point in this Cold War. A wall cuts through the city. People lose their lives, flee or are deported. Here, in 1961, Soviet and US tanks faced one another, ready to fight. Checkpoint Charlie is a part of world history and a place charged with symbolism: the ideal site for an exhibition on the Cold War.
