Chocolate Museum Cologne

Hans Imhoff, a passionate chocolate manufacturer, had the dream of building a chocolate museum with a bubbling chocolate fountain. After he took over the Stollwerck factory in Cologne, he found scrap parts that he had restored, thus laying the foundation for his museum. He used the time to research the cultural and industrial history of chocolate and steadily expanded his collection. Together with his wife, he finally found the perfect location for the museum in Cologne's Rheinauhafen. The transparent building with aluminum and glass frames the old main customs office, which now houses a chocolate factory. With more than 600,000 visitors a year, the Chocolate Museum is one of the most visited cultural institutions in Cologne. The exhibition areas on three levels show the 5000-year cultural history of cocoa, modern chocolate production and praline making by hand. Visitors can experience a walk-through tropical house, see pre-Columbian exhibits, admire old machinery from industrialization, and watch chocolate products being made in the glass chocolate factory and chocolate atelier.

The Chocolate Factory :

The glass chocolate factory is the heart of the chocolate museum and was completely redesigned in 2020. It offers visitors a modern and sensory museum experience with eye-catching visualizations and exciting media stations. The production line shows the entire chocolate-making process, from life-size raw material containers to the finished bar. Important inventions that paved the way to melt-in-your-mouth chocolate can also be admired.

Hollow figure studio:

In the Chocolate Museum's Hollow Figure Studio, visitors can see firsthand how sweet hollow figures such as unicorns, bunnies and panda bears are intricately handcrafted. The Maîtres Chocolatiers require a great deal of experience and passion for this process, which often involves applying liquid chocolate to specific details. Visitors have the opportunity to take home a souvenir of their visit or purchase small chocolate works of art as gifts for their loved ones, which are available at the chocolate counter on the 1st floor.
