Flensburg

The beautiful port and trading city of Flensburg is located directly on the Fjord, a branch of the Baltic Sea. The people of Flensburg owe their very own language to their direct neighborhood with Denmark: Petuh. Surrounded by a charming landscape of green beech forests, lush sandy beaches on the coast and the historic city center, the little town is a maritime oasis of well-being and a popular destination for day trips.
With its small captain's houses, picturesque alleys, Gothic brick churches and museum harbor, Schleswig-Holstein's third-largest city has an entirely tranquil feel. Magnificent merchants' houses and numerous other historical sights in the well-preserved old town bear witness to the wealth and prestige of past centuries. For example, the Nordertor, the only surviving city gate of the former city fortifications and today's landmark of the city.
The merchant's yards along the Norderstraße are considered an architectural feature of the city. The merchant's yard at No. 86 dates from the 18th century and was used for processing goods stored in the transverse warehouse to the harbor. It also housed the cattle stables, the well system and the servants' quarters, while the merchants lived in the front house. Between the Great Street and the warehouse line, the old West India Warehouse is hidden in a beautiful backyard. Since the 18th century it served as a warehouse for goods and raw materials mainly from the West Indies, which were needed for the distillation of Flensburg rum.
The Nordermarkt, dating from the Wilhelminian period, with St. Mary's Church and Porticus House. The Schrangen dates from the 16th century and was built as a connection between the church and the market square. Protected under the shade of the arcades, bakers and butchers offered their wares for sale. Even today it is a popular meeting place and place of encounter. Around the Neptune Fountain it is wonderful to stroll in the summer or watch the hustle and bustle from a place under a parasol of the surrounding cafes.

Highlights in Flensburg

Rote Straße

The historic alley in Flensburg's southern Old Town runs from Südermarkt to just outside the Rude district, from which the street derives its name. For centuries it has been lined with numerous art and antique dealers, galleries, cozy cafés and wine taverns with fascinating merchants' and craftsmen's courtyards. In summer, Flensburger Hofkultur conjures up charming flair in the backyards of the picturesque alley: visitors can listen to open-air concert, cabaret and theater performances and indulge in culinary highlights along the way.

Museumsberg

The Museumsberg has some highlights in store for art lovers. The municipal museum portrays the history of art in the former duchy of Schleswig from the 13th to the 20th century. The exhibition focuses on the furniture collection of Flensburg furniture manufacturer Heinrich Sauermann. In another building, regional works of art from the 19th century to the present are exhibited.

Historic Harbour

In the heart of the old town is the harbor of the old maritime city of Flensburg. It is still an important place and is a wonderful starting point for a leisurely stroll through the city. Stroll along the ships bobbing in the water, where fishermen go about their work, watch the excursion boats arriving and departing, or attend the regular sporting events such as the Rum Regatta. The Captain's Trail, which starts here, leads along historical sights of the old seafaring town and presents some insider tips within the old town. Floor plates with a steering wheel motif point the way. Embark on a voyage of discovery and see Flensburg through the eyes of 19th century captains!
The nearby Maritime Museum presents exhibits from Flensburg's 700-year history of trade and shipping. Together with the museum harbor and the museum shipyard, the entire maritime cultural history of Flensburg is presented.

Mürwik

In the northeast of Flensburg and directly on the shore of the fjord lies Mürwik, the largest district of the port city. As a former naval area, it looks back on an eventful past. The listed naval buildings as well as the modern marina Marina Sonwik are reminders of this and transfer the maritime flair into the present. In the guest marina, sailors, kite surfers and other water sports enthusiasts ensure lively activity in the bay. During the summer months (May - September), the water tower in Mürwik not only offers insights into the impressive interior, which holds up to 1.5 million liters, but also a wonderful view from the viewing platform over the city on the fjord all the way to Denmark.
Although Flensburg is not a classic seaside resort, the dreamlike sandy beach in Solitüde, just north of Mürwik, entices visitors to sunbathe and splash around.

Glücksburg Castle

Glücksburg Castle, one of the most important Renaissance castles in Schleswig-Holstein and all of Northern Europe. It is considered the cradle of European royalty and is the landmark of the town of Glücksburg. It is located on the Flensburg Fjord and is perfect for a day trip.
Built in the 16th century in the Renaissance style, the castle served the high nobility as the ancestral seat of the ducal lines and residence of the Danish royal family. It was built on the base of the former medieval Rude Monastery and from the building material used for it. The castle owes its name to the motto of the builder, Duke John the Younger, which is emblazoned with the coat of arms above the entrance portal: "God grant happiness with peace".
The castle rises majestically from the water surrounding it and offers visitors a fairytale-like sight. The castle has been open to the public since 1925. Imposing palace corridors and salons with pompous furnishings and impressive stucco work house the palace museum with numerous art-historical treasures. The exhibits consist of royal portraits, landscape paintings, porcelain and silverware, and colorful calfskin wallpaper.
The entire ensemble consists of the castle and the spacious surrounding castle park, which invites to extensive walks in fairy-tale surroundings.
Guided tours offer the opportunity to learn more about the castle, its rooms and the history of its construction. The night tour "Night in the Castle" is particularly popular. By moonlight and a glass of sparkling wine, you will gain surprising impressions of the 400-year-old walls. In addition, the castle offers an impressive backdrop for regular events.
