Oberkasseler Bridge

The Oberkasseler Bridge crosses the Rhine and belongs to the Düsseldorf bridge family. This makes it one of three river bridges built over the last 25 years in Düsseldorf city centre, alongside the Theodor-Heuss Bridge in the north and the Kniebrücke Bridge in the south. Originally, the first Düsseldorf road bridge was built here by the Rheinische Bahngesellschaft between 1896 and 1898.
At the end of the Second World War, the bridge was blown up and temporarily replaced by a pontoon bridge. As this bridge could no longer cope with the growing traffic volume of the upcoming Rhine metropolis, the temporary bridge was replaced in 1976. The Oberkasseler Bridge was built close to the old bridge and then moved to its present location in a spectacular action that attracted worldwide attention.
