Kaiserbäder Usedom

Lined up like a string of pearls are the three charming seaside resorts of Bansin, Heringsdorf and Ahlbeck on the white coast of Usedom. They are generally known as the "imperial spas" and look back on a long and fashionable history. After the first bathing season was opened in Swinemünde in 1824, gradually more and more places received permission to receive bathers. Since time immemorial, the island of Usedom has been considered the "Berlin bathtub" and was equipped accordingly with bathing establishments and lodging houses. In the 19th and 20th centuries, anyone who thought anything of himself spent the summer on the sunny island - the Berlin high society of the German Empire resided here. Wide staircases, stucco, column-framed loggias, turrets and balustrades: Beauty, luxury and exclusivity still emanate from the magnificent spa architecture today.
"... one has peace and fresh air and these two things work like miracles and fill nerves, blood, lungs with a quiet delight", with these words in a letter to his wife Emilie in 1863 Theodor Fontane recorded his enthusiasm for the Baltic seaside resorts, which he shared with many other artists of his time.  Since time immemorial, the imperial spas have exerted a strong attraction, which to this day continues to lure numerous guests to bathe and stroll at any time of the year.
All the spas offer an extensive range of leisure activities, including active recreation, sports, culture and wellness. But even the little ones get their money's worth on the fine sandy beach, splashing around, building sand castles, flying kites and much more.

The three imperial seaside resorts in profile

Heringsdorf

As the "Nice of the East", Heringsdorf is the oldest and most popular seaside resort on Usedom. The heyday of the imperial spas began here in the 19th and 20th centuries. Today, magnificent noble villas shine between well-kept parks. Not to be forgotten, of course, is the dreamy white sandy beach that caters to recreation seekers, bathing enthusiasts, sand castle architects and sun worshippers alike. The more than 500-meter-long pier is the longest of its kind in Germany, is considered the landmark of the tranquil town and offers a magnificent view of the imperial architectural ensemble behind the dunes.
By the way: another popular sight since 2014 is the largest beach chair in the world. It is located directly next to the aforementioned pier and offers space for 90 people.

Ahlbeck

The neighboring town of Ahlbeck also looks back on a storied past. It is the easternmost of the three imperial resorts and can also boast a superlative in terms of its pier: it is the oldest surviving pier in Germany and has been a listed building since 1986. Of course, it is particularly contemplative in the light of dusk, when the sun slowly sinks behind the horizon.
What is special about Ahlbeck? Not only aristocrats resided here, but also less wealthy vacationers. Thus, the number of vacationers increased rapidly and required, in addition to the many large villas, smaller accommodation facilities, which in time gave the place an urban character that persists to this day.
The 3.5 km long and up to 70 meters wide stretch of beach is particularly suitable for families, because the sea slopes here quite gently and allows a long walk into the cool water.

Bansin

Bansin is the smallest and youngest of the three imperial resorts and was created more out of a lack of space when it became apparent that Usedom was becoming increasingly popular as a vacation destination. Today, it scores above all with its beautiful location: not only the coastal section with its fine sandy beach offers itself as a destination for excursions, but also the crab and Gothen lakes to the south, which temptingly invite you to hikes and bike tours off the coast.
On the promenade, of course, you can admire the typical classicist spa architecture. From here, the view of the sparkling Baltic Sea is open. The place is perfect to set out for a walk along the 12 km long promenade to Swinoujscie. The pier is rather practical and simple and serves as a mooring for excursion boats.
