The Old Town Hall lines the east side of the central market square in Leipzig. In the Renaissance style, the foundation stone was laid to create a place worthy of the administrative purposes of urban life in the trading town, which had become extensive in the middle of the 14th century. The once venerable centre of administration, trade and justice was moved to the New Town Hall as early as 1905, so that in 1909 the "Stadtgeschichtliches Museum der Stadt Leipzig" was able to move in here, which houses relics of the city's history from the Middle Ages to the present day. Among them, for example, is the only authentic portrait of the famous composer Johann Sebastian Bach, as he signs his certificate of employment as cantor of the Thomanerchor in the Ratsstube.
