The Altmarkt is the oldest square in Dresden and was originally designed as a market square. It was and is the centre of social life - markets, festivals and even tournaments are held here. After most of the buildings around the market place were destroyed during the Second World War, only the nearby Kreuzkirche was reconstructed. The rebuilding of the remaining buildings was based on the baroque architectural style in the 1950s.
The Altmarkt has always been known for its versatility: not only is the famous Striezelmarkt held here year after year - one of the oldest Christmas markets in the world. It also provides the backdrop for the annual spring market, summer volleyball tournaments and the popular flea market, where merchants sell their goods and numerous residents and visitors to the state capital go in search of old treasures.
