Museumsinsel

The Museumsinsel Berlin is a building ensemble of five museums in the historical center of Berlin in the northern part of the Spree Island. It is one of the most important sights of the German capital and one of the most important museum complexes in Europe. It was built between 1830 and 1930 by order of the Prussian kings. The 5 museums include: The Old Museum, the New Museum, the Old National Gallery, the Bode Museum and the Pergamon Museum.

Overview of the museums

Old National Gallery

The Old National Gallery features paintings and sculptures from the 19th century, from Caspar David Friedrich to the French Impressionists to frescoes by the Nazarenes working in Rome.

Old Museum

The Altes Museum was the first museum on the Museum Island in Berlin. It was built between 1823 and 1830 by Karl friedrich Schinkel. Today it presents the collection of antiquities: from painted vases and the "Praying Boy" to colorful Etruscan architectural fragments that harmonize exceptionally with the classicist building. Bode-Museum

The neo-baroque Bode Museum rises at the top of Museum Island like a moated castle.
The museum displays Byzantine works of art from the 3rd to the 15th century, Italian and German sculptures and sculptures from the early Middle Ages to the 18th century in the sculpture collection and various coin series in the coin cabinet, as well as selected holdings of the old masters collection in the picture gallery.

New Museum

The New Museum contains the Egyptian Museum and the Papyrus Collection with works of art from the time of King Akhenaten. One of the most beautiful sculptures in the world welcomes visitors: the famous bust of Egyptian Queen Nefertiti.
Furthermore, there are the exhibitions of the Museum of Prehistory and Early History with finds from the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age, from Troy with copies of the Schliemann gold, from Cyprus, from the Roman provinces, the Migration Period and the early Middle Ages and later periods.

James-Simon-Gallery

The James Simon Gallery is the new entrance building and visitor center on Berlin's Museum Island. It takes on central service functions: Here visitors receive their tickets and find information on all the houses as well as a café, the museum store, an auditorium and a room for special exhibitions.
