A few kilometres upriver, easily accessible by paddle steamer, the impressive palace and garden complex blends into the Elbe landscape around Pillnitz. Here once the Elector of Saxony, August the Strong, celebrated joyful festivals. In 1713, he left the seeming grounds of his mistress to Countess Cosel, who also lived there for several years. When she fell from grace, it became August's summer residence again. The castle and park complex is considered "the most important chinoise castle complex in Europe".
The annual camomile blossom in Pillnitz is an absolute highlight and visitors can marvel at exotic plants on 660 square metres in the somewhat hidden palm house.
The castle museum houses an exhibition on everyday life in the royal family. There the visitor can discover the castle kitchen as well as the chapel and all kinds of things around courtly life.
