The Basilica of St. John the Baptist was completed in 1758 according to the plans of the architect Friedrich Joachim Michael Stengel in the baroque style. It was built on the site of the first medieval chapel of the former fishing village of St. Johann on the Saar. Since then, the Catholic Church has grown immensely in its function for the city - not only because of its presence in the heart of the city, its social services, but also because of its artistic and architectural significance. When you visit, be sure to look at the reliefs above the entrance!
In 1975 Pope Paul VI awarded it the honorary title of "Basilica minor", a status for important church buildings.
