Monument to the Battle of the Nations

The Völkerschlachtdenkmal commemorates the Battle of the Nations from 16 to 19 October 1813. It is one of Leipzig's most famous landmarks and is also affectionately called "Völki" by its inhabitants. During the wars of liberation the allied armies of Prussia, Austria, Sweden and Russia won the decisive victory over Napoleon and his allies. Since its inauguration in 1913, the 91 metre high monument, together with the artificial lake of tears, has honoured the 100,000 fallen soldiers from over twenty nations.
The monument also has a viewing platform that offers its visitors a breathtaking view of Leipzig after 500 steps.
