History of the museum :

The Filmmuseum Düsseldorf is located on the grounds of the former 18th century city prison at the Old Port. The building has an eventful history dating back to the 1950s. Due to its success far beyond the borders of Düsseldorf, the Film Institute of the state capital Düsseldorf was founded on March 15, 1979.

The Filminstitut had the task of collecting and preserving film and film-related materials. In 1983, the Filminstitut moved to premises in the Wilhelm-Marx-Haus, where the successor to the Filmforum, the "Black Box", was also established.

The then director of the Film Institute, Klaus G. Jaeger, succeeded in finding supporters for the idea of a separate film museum. The foundation stone for the museum was laid on September 15, 1989, and the topping-out ceremony was celebrated a year later. Until the opening of the new museum in 1993, exhibitions were held in other museums.

Today, the Film Museum has permanent and special exhibition rooms, as well as a 135-seat cinema hall, where sophisticated film history programs, special series and special films are shown. In 2013, the Film Museum celebrated its 20th anniversary together with the citizens of the city. Today, the Film Museum is an important place for teaching the history and present of German and international film.
