The Schöne Brunnen "beautiful fountain" is one of the highlights of the city. Located in the middle of Nuremberg's old town; on the edge of the main market square, next to the town hall and at the foot of the Frauenkirche, the 19-metre-high fountain is reminiscent of a Gothic church spire. Richly decorated, the fountain symbolizes the theocentric world view of the Middle Ages. The forty painted figures representing philosophy and the Seven Liberal Arts, the four Evangelists and the four Church Fathers, the seven Electors and the Nine Good Heroes as well as Moses and seven Prophets stand in four rows.
According to the legend, those who turn the ring in the fountain grid fulfill three wishes, and those who turn it three times are rewarded with plenty of child blessings. To the astonishment of many, the ring has no seam, and is said to have been attached there by an apprentice locksmith without the knowledge of his master, he is therefore also known under the name "Handwerksburschenwahrzeichen" of Nuremberg.
